Fish Oil – The importance of Omega 3 Fatty Acid’s
Categories:

In Dr. Phelps’ opinion omega 3’s are the most important supplement.  One of the reasons is that our bodies are incapable of making them on their own, they must come from our food.  The problem with the Standard American Diet (SAD) is that it is full of omega 6’s.  Now there is only so much capacity in your body for omega 3’s and 6’s so they exist in a ratio.  So with the excess consumption of Omega 6 fats it makes the ratio’s out of balance.  For most people, an omega 6 to omega 3 ratio of 4:1 is ideal (4 omega 6s for every 1 omega 3).  Anti-aging experts suggest going even further, maintaining a 1:1 ratio or higher in favor of omega 3s. The average American eats a ratio of anywhere from 12:1 to 25:1 omega 6 to omega 3 which creates inflammation response with in the body.  Now in my opinion inflammation is the pre cursor for all chronic diseases that we see in the united states, from heart disease to arthritis to cancer.  This is why taking an omega 3 supplement is so important because is helps balance the ratios between omega 3’s and 6’s.  Some other amazing things that Omega 3’s do.  They are an integral part of cells membranes throughout the entire body and affect the cell receptors in these membranes.  Omega 3s also provide a launchpad for making hormones that regulate blood, heart, and genetic function.  So don’t forget to eat your healthy fats, like avocado’s and salmon because your body needs fat to survive and supplement with a high quality omega 3 to keep your ratio’s balance and your body healthy.
